Through photography, I like to explore our connection to the night sky. This image shares the visual and emotional experience of a truly dark night sky. Here, my husband and friends are standing on a remote island in the marine wilderness of northern Lake Superior. I chose to include people in the photo so that a viewer can relate to their perspective. And I chose to leave in the light trails from the planes and satellites criss-crossing the Milky Way as this reality of human activity is inescapable even in the darkest of places.

This photograph was years in the making. Ordinarily, my husband and I sail alone on Lake Superior. This year, however, friends on another sailboat joined us for a few days. And even more special, spent a night with us to see the Milky Way. This at last gave me a chance to explore people relating to both the night sky and each other.
