Private Photography Workshop

August 29 – 31, 2024

This year we are offering Private Workshops for those who desire a one-on-one learning experience. Each class is expertly tailored to your specific needs to help guide YOU towards capturing and creating YOUR personal artistic vision. Brad’s personal attention allows YOU the freedom to relax in the outdoors and completely immerse yourself in the learning process at YOUR speed. These personalized classes are structured around all skill levels from beginner to professional photographers seeking a much more intensified and personal approach for capturing the night sky and landscape photography.

On a clear day, Mount Shasta can be seen from over 100 miles (160 km) away. During this private instruction, you will be free from big city lights, allowing you to enjoy star-filled nights under a rich and complex wilderness backdrop. This snow-covered, sacred landmark towering over Shasta/Trinity National Forest land, is just 60 miles south of the Oregon border in wooded northern California, midway between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon. Her dormant volcano peak rises 14,179 feet (4322 m) high and is the second highest volcano within the Pacific Basin’s notorious “Ring of Fire.” Water from five glaciers provide moisture for lush meadows teaming with wildflowers, great pine and red fir forests, high alpine lakes, tumbling streams and dramatic waterfalls before finally flowing down the Sacramento Valley and into the San Francisco Bay.

“When I first caught sight of Mount Shasta over the braided folds of the Sacramento Valley, I was fifty miles away and afoot, alone and weary. Yet my blood turned to wine, and I have not been weary since.”

John Muir, 1874

Topics Covered & Materials Included

This 3 day, private workshop begins with a consultation with Brad to determine what YOU would like to focus on during your time together. Learn at a slower or faster pace capturing the night sky than with a group. Want to focus on strengthening your compositions? Do you struggle with post processing? Want to learn about time-lapse photography? How about spending a couple nights in the backcountry? Anything is possible in your private workshop because they are designed specifically around YOU.

We can shoot two or three nights at various locations throughout the Mount Shasta area, and end with a 4-hour post processing session. You will receive a copy of our customized workshop booklet with step-by-step instructions about all phases of post processing for personal reference. During all field work, we will follow “Leave No Trace” principles to minimize any impact on the environment. With at least 65 topics you may choose to work on:

  • A comprehensive understanding of the night sky (Earth’s orbit, location of the Milky Way, meteor showers, moon cycles, etc.)
  • Appreciate the importance of planning for your shoot and learn advanced methods
  • Understand the differences between shutter speed/aperture/ISO/white balance, and more
  • Learn how to capture and translate your artistic vision
  • Begin to master the art of capturing the Milky Way, create star trails, panoramas, composites, and more
  • Introductory or advanced time-lapse shooting and processing
  • Receive personal tips and special techniques
  • Gain new skills with advanced post processing methods in Bridge & Photoshop

“I recently took a private workshop from Brad. If you ever have the opportunity, I highly recommend it. It was by far the best workshop I’ve ever participated in. Prior to the workshop, Brad asked me for a list of things I wanted to cover and he succeeded in covering each topic. The entire experience was tailored to my needs. Brad even brought his equipment in case mine malfunctioned, which it did! He offered as much or as little assistance as I wanted and although we were on a time schedule, the pace was very relaxed & enjoyable. It was a lot of fun. I went on some exciting adventures & took some beautiful pictures in the process. I stayed at a cute Airbnb cabin which made our meetings for the workshop very easy. I’ve had editing questions since I’ve gotten back home and he’s kindly answered them. In short, it costs a bit more than a group workshop, but the experience is far better.”
