In June 2024, I visited this canyon and it was probably the clearest skies and calmest winds I’ve experienced there. I grew up a short distance from here, and this picture will always remind me of home. This is probably my favorite place to shoot the night sky. A year after I took this shot, both rims of this canyon were under assault by a massive wildfire which closed the park. The south rim took the brunt with the fire lasting 70 days and consuming over 4200 acres. It will recover, but not in my lifetime.

I was in Grand Marais MN and the Aurora is always so 'intrusive" on the Milky Way. This time the colors just could not be ignored. Between the yellow of the light pollution and the green of the glow to the pink of the aurora this was truly a rainbow!

My one astro focused trip this year was to Bryce Canyon and the surrounding area in June. We managed to shoot for five nights and I got a number of decent images. This one of Swamp Canyon is my favorite because of the balance created between the tree and the Milky Way, the leading lines into the canyon and the air glow in the night sky.
