Grace Island anchors the west end of Isle Royale in northern Lake Superior. This image, my favorite of the year, reminds me of a perfect day on the Lake. Diane and I set out from Thunder Bay, Ontario and sailed across to Isle Royale with winds at first favorable, then adverse and finally back to favorable. As the daylight faded and the winds died, we anchored in the protection of Grace Island. (Our sailboat, San Francisco, is out of the frame on the left.) We rowed to the island and quickly hiked to the narrow wet spit of black gravel and sand. The sun set and the Rock of Ages Lighthouse (on the right margin) pinpointed the western horizon. We waited and watched as the Milky Way brightened and rose in league with Mars. We were the sole witnesses to this moment of sky grace. September 5, 2018
