Summer Night at John Oliver’s Cabin

This image was recorded in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, at one of the historic cabins in the Cades Cove area of the park. This image is my favorite because of the combination of the experience and the execution involved in creating this image. The experience of hiking over a mile in the middle of the night and waiting alone in the dark for several hours until the Milky Way moved into just the right position, and the planning and execution of the composition and photographic methods required to light the interior of the cabin and surrounding landscape, and combining that with the image of the Milky Way, all came together under a dark, clear sky. The howling coyotes and the roaming white tail deer made the experience very memorable.
